Life is an adventurous ride with ups and downs. We should take every possible chance to celebrate and to enjoy flying high up. And back to school is one of those moments. Discover my 5 simple tips to decrease your stress level in this period and to celebrate! Buckle up!
Summer break is coming to an end... And we're already on the 'back to school' mode. Both parents and children are experiencing a bunch of contradicting emotions: anxiety and relief, excitement and impatience, fear and joy. Stressful times.
What if you flip the coin and make it a celebration? You're in the right place. Start by reading this article and continue with booking a session of "Raise World Citizens: RespectFul Childcare" Program. Want to make the preparation hustle and the start of this school year a joyful celebration for yourself, your kids, and family? Discover my secret: 5 easy-steps to decrease back-to-school stress level and anxiety in yourself, your child, partner, and family in general. Here we go:
Tip 1: Slow down for a second. Take a moment for a breath-in-and-out.
A deep breath in with your nose and out with your mouth four times to relax your body and mind. Many parents don't even realize that it's actually them who create this stressful and anxious hustle around back to school. Your stress levels and that of your children is elevated. Relax and enjoy this period. Everything is under control. Under your control!
Tip 2: Write down a simple "To-Do" list and check off your list what’s done.
Sending kids off to school might seem like an unknown mountain to climb. Why not divide this mountain into to-do tasks and climb certain small hills? One by one. Even experienced parents often forget this efficient organizational tool. We try to do everything fast and at the same time. As a result, we're stressed out and exhausted. Children are more nervous than usual at the begining of school. Some important tasks are undone, and things are forgotten. Chaos. Don't do that to yourself…

Step 3: Talk to and listen carefully to your child.
Ask simple questions such as "Are you excited about going back to school? Why? Why not? Try to figure out the root of the problem, if there's an issue, and address it. Is it a teacher or a bully? Is it a general lack of self-confidence or doubts. Don’t pressure your child about grades. Be reminded that grades are important but the skills acquired at school are vital for your child. Teach them to enjoy the process of learning. Visualize together with your son/daughter a positive scenario of his/her school life.
Grades and tests are a measure of your child's ability to learn and memorize a predetermined curriculum based on a standardized expectations. That's only one piece of the puzzle. There are many incredibly important things your child is learning in school (and in life) that are not measured by tests and grades: social skills, responsibility, self relience, creativity, decision-making and coping skills. - Dr. Siggie, Child Development Specialist (US).

Step 4: Fix your child's sleep regime.
During the summer holidays, children tend to go to bed late and consequently wake up late. If you reintroduce a school schedule starting the first days of school, your child experiences an additional burden of adjusting to the school hours because of the lack of sleep. So, it’s better to move their bedtime every day by 1 hour earlier, a week in advance, and shift their night rest hours. If his/her sleep regime isn’t back to normal by the beginning of the school week, make sure your son/daughter goes to bed early to get enough restful sleep during the first most stressful week. Reminder: a child should get a minimum 10 hours of sleep within 24 hours (for teens, it's reccomended a minimum of 12 hours).
Step 5. Make the beginning of school a celebration!
Get a small gift for your child. Prepare a celebratory dinner or go out for an ice-cream or to have your kid’s favorite meal. Almost like celebrating his/her birthday. Open a bottle of champagne with your partner or friends on the first day after you’ve sent off kids to school! Yahoo! Celebrate the fact that your workload is now shared by teachers and that you have more time for yourself. A celebration will ease the tension, lift up spirits, and relax you, your child, and other family members. Add a happy moment to your memory box!
