Hello, beautiful souls!
Ever heard of the term 'Cosmokids'? It's a fun and endearing term we've coined for children who are raised to understand, respect, and appreciate the variety of cultures our wonderful world has to offer. Having grown up in diplomatic families and served as diplomats ourselves, including in the United Nations, my husband and I have been incredibly fortunate to experience a multitude of cultures firsthand. This rich tapestry of experiences has not only shaped us as individuals but significantly influenced our approach to parenting.
Our backgrounds make us keenly aware of the importance of teaching children about respecting and appreciating diversity. Therefore, we are passionate about raising our children to be the Cosmokids, or World Citizens. This multicultural approach to parenting, influenced by our own experiences, forms a significant part of my coaching program 'Raise World Citizens: Respectful Childcare'. Today, I'm excited to share some strategies to help you raise your own Cosmokids.
Tip 1. Encourage Curiosity of Your CosmoKids

Every Cosmokid's journey begins with curiosity, therefore, the first step to respect is understanding. Foster your child's natural interest in people, places, and traditions that are different from their own. Engage with their questions and explore the answers together. This practice will cultivate an open mind and a thirst for knowledge, leading to more informed perceptions and respect for the world cultures.
Tip 2. Diversify Their World

Broaden your future Cosmokid's horizons by introducing by introducing them to diverse cultures, religions, races, and family structures throught interesting ways. For example, reading children's books of foreign authors, themed drawing together, incorporating documentaries about different cultures into your family movie nights or celebrate a variety of cultural festivals with family and friends. For example, we celebrate the New Year at least three times a year — Gregorian, Nawruz (the solar New Year), and Chinese New Year. It's not just fun; it's an enlightening way to instill appreciation for diversity. For more celebration ideas, refer to my article "Raising World Citizens: Your Guide to Exploring Global Celebrations with Kids".
Tip 3. Cook Up Some Culture

Food is a language all Cosmokids can speak! Prepare dishes from different cuisines, talk about their origins, and allow your child to explore cultures through their taste buds. This can lead to exciting discoveries. I still remember the fun confusion when my firstborn found out that kompot, a cold beverage he loves, has a French namesake 'compote,' which is a dessert of fruits. What an interesting way to learn about the different cultural interpretations of food!
Tip 4. Cultivate Cultural Identity of CosmoKids

In the quest to raise a Cosmokid, remember the importance of your family's own cultural heritage. Regularly practice traditions to give your children a sense of belonging and connection to their roots. While we explore the diverse world, let's not forget our roots. Share your family's cultural heritage with your children. Discuss your ancestors and their lifestyle to help them connect to their heritage. Embracing one's identity while respecting others is a key to coexisting harmoniously in a multicultural world. For further thoughts on this, you can read my article "Cultivate Cultural Identity of Your Modern Family in Respect for Diversity".
Tip 5. Be a Role Model
Children are perceptive, often mirror what they see and learn by example. Your words, actions and attitudes towards other cultures are their lessons. Showcase respect and appreciation for diversity in your everyday life. Your little Cosmokids will learn from you and emulate your respect for the global community.

Final remarks
Every step towards fostering respect for diversity in our children is a step towards a more understanding and peaceful world. This journey is an ongoing process, filled with constant learning and beautiful discoveries.
